Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

Faith Audiology & Speech Therapy (FAST) organisation is like a helping hand for children and families in Northern Uganda who have trouble with talking, hearing, or listening. Did you know that about 34% of children between 3 and 10 years old have difficulties with talking or swallowing worldwide? In Northern Uganda alone, over a million people are living with such disabilities, with about 10% of them facing speech, hearing, or physical challenges. But here's where FAST steps in we've already reached over 4000 children directly and 6000 more indirectly, helping them with therapy sessions and support programs. Even though Northern Uganda has faced tough times in the past due to war, FAST is making a big difference in the lives of these people and families, one step at a time!

Our Story

As the Executive Director of Faith Audiology & Speech Therapy Organization (FAST), my journey began at the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services in Uganda (CoRSU) Hospital. There, I witnessed the challenges many people faced in accessing speech therapy and audiology services, particularly those from northern Uganda who had to travel long distances to Kampala for assistance. Witnessing their struggles deeply moved me, and I found myself translating for them and helping them navigate the complex healthcare system.

Motivated by these experiences, I joined forces with three of my friends and together, as two speech therapists and two special needs teachers, we founded Faith Over Fear (FOF) speech and language therapy. Starting as a grassroots initiative, we focused on reaching communities within the slums of Kampala. Despite facing initial challenges and receiving minimal support, our determination to help those in need kept us going.

However, I soon realized that to make a more significant impact, we needed to expand our reach beyond Kampala. It was during this time that I met Lois Ovenden, a missionary working as a Speech Therapist in Gulu. Recognizing the potential for collaboration, Lois and I joined forces. With her securing funding through BMS, we were able to relocate FOF to Gulu and officially register it. Supported by grants from BMS through JLH Uganda, we established a more permanent presence at St. Philips Health Center.

This marked the birth of Faith Audiology & Speech Therapy Organization (FAST), a beacon of hope for individuals and families facing speech, language, and hearing difficulties in Northern Uganda. Since then, FAST has grown into a reliable provider of rehabilitative healthcare services, embodying our values of professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and innovation. Through our continued dedication and collaboration with partners, we strive to make a tangible difference in the lives of those we serve.
