In the hustle of school life, it’s easy to overlook quiet struggles — especially those that can’t be seen. Hearing loss is one such invisible challenge that many children face, often without even knowing it. But thanks to Faith Audiology and Speech Therapy (FAST) and their innovative school-based audiology program, children are now finding relief, restored hearing, and renewed joy in learning.
One Student’s Journey: Helena’s Story
Meet Apiyo Helena Aketch, a 10-year-old Primary Six pupil at Credo Nursery and Primary School. For more than a year, Helena silently battled recurring ear problems. Her hearing was often muffled, she heard constant buzzing sounds, and sometimes her ears felt completely blocked.
The issue wasn’t just physical — it was also affecting her performance in class. Teachers had to repeat themselves constantly, and her parents became increasingly worried. They considered taking her to see an ear specialist, but accessing affordable and convenient care was difficult.
Then came a breakthrough — in the form of a letter from school.
Bringing Care Directly to the Classroom
Credo Nursery and Primary School had partnered with FAST to offer on-site audiology services to all learners. Parents were notified and gave their consent without hesitation. Helena was one of the students assessed during the outreach.
When FAST’s specialists examined Helena’s ears, they discovered impacted earwax completely blocking both ear canals — a common but often unrecognized cause of hearing loss in children.
Following a gentle and professional ear cleaning procedure, Helena felt immediate relief. Her hearing improved drastically, and for the first time in months, she could hear clearly.
“Now, my teachers don’t have to repeat themselves,” Helena shared with a smile.“I can hear everything instantly, and I feel so much better!”
Why School-Based Audiology Services Matter
FAST’s school-based audiology model is making a real difference in children’s lives. Here’s why it matters:
Early Detection: Identifying hearing issues before they cause academic or developmental delays.
Access to Specialists: Bringing professional services directly to schools removes barriers for families.
Improved Learning Outcomes: Students with healthy hearing can fully engage and thrive in class.
Community Awareness: Involving parents and teachers promotes long-term hearing health.
For Helena, what seemed like a small intervention turned into a life-changing moment — improving not just her hearing, but also her confidence and ability to participate in school.
A Sound Investment in the Future
FAST’s school-based audiology services are a powerful reminder that hearing health is essential to learning. By delivering expert care where children already are — in school — they’re making hearing care more accessible, effective, and impactful.
We celebrate Apiyo Helena Aketch’s story and the dedicated team at FAST. Every child deserves the opportunity to hear clearly, learn fully, and grow without limitations.
